Kathmandu, August 9
David Thapa Magar, Sambhavi Palak and Sakshyam Dhakal won the titles of the Kathmandu Badminton Championship at the Tribhuvan Memorial Hall on the premises of TU in Kirtipur today.
Thapa Magar from Caribbean School won the U-14 boys singles gold medal of the Inter-school tournament defeating Abhiyan Kashyap of Kathmandu Meridian 21-13, 21-10 in the final. Nikesh Pokharel of Galaxy and Pratyak Aryal of KMC finished joint third.
The British School shuttler Palak won the U-14 and U-12 girls’ singles titles. Palak defeated Nima Yanzi Sherpa of Galaxy 21-10, 21-4 in the U-14 section final. Imek Luma Lawati of Canvas and Shophiya Maharjan of Panga finished joint third. Also, Palak beat another Galaxy player, Shera J Sherpa 21-2, 21-7 to win the U-12 section gold. Pranisha Shrestha of St Xavier’s and Prisha Singh of Kendriya Vidhyalaya came joint third.
In the U-12 boys’ singles final, Dhakal from Valley View School registered a 21-13, 21-5 victory over Kakesh Satyal of Buddha International School. Shreyash Ranjitkar of Lisha and Biswas Budhathoki of NME finished joint third. Top three shuttlers in U-14 sections received Rs 30,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively, while the winners in U-12 categories got Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000.
Around 900 players from the schools of Kathmandu valley participated in the four-day tournament organised jointly by Kathmandu District Badminton Association and Sports Science Department of TU under the auspices of Private and Boarding School Organisation Nepal. NOC President Jeevan Ram Shrestha, President of Nepal Badminton Association Ramji Bahadur Shrestha, Vice-president of Nepal Taekwondo Association Sanjeev Regmi, President of Nepal National and International Players Association Deepak Shrestha and Olympian taekwondo ace Deepak Bista among others handed over the prizes to the winners.
Meanwhile, the KDBA felicitated veteran coach Mahendra Lal Shrestha for his contribution in the sport. NOC President Shrestha and KDBA President Thapa handed over the felicitation letter along with Rs 10,000 to coach Shrestha.
