Kathmandu, September 5
Minister of Industry, Commerce and Supplies Matrika Yadav today said that he will not give into pressure while cracking down on anti-consumer activities and unscrupulous traders.
Addressing a media conference here today, Minister Yadav said that his ministry has been repeatedly facing pressure — intended to affect regular activities and decisions of the government on consumer issues — from various stakeholders. “However, during my leadership, the ministry will adopt zero tolerance against malpractices in the market,” said Yadav.
In the backdrop of increasing flow of substandard food products in the market, Yadav said that the government will book all those involved in deceiving consumers and not complying with the law. “However, there is an urgent need to regulate the food market in an integrated manner by reforming the existing laws and policies,” added Yadav.
Commenting on the recent inspection carried by the government at Probiotech Industries — a subsidiary of Nimbus Group — Yadav said, “The firm was found to be selling imported edible oil, even though it has obtained the licence to produce oil in the country. We will soon seal the industry and call its owner for further clarification.”
Meanwhile, Yadav also informed that the government will intensify its market monitoring targeting the upcoming festive season. “As the demand for various food products surges ahead of the festivals, we are committed to ensure supply of quality food products ahead of Dashain, Tihar and Chhath,” added Yadav.
Likewise, Yadav also said that the government would soon launch a series of programmes aiming to promote domestic industries and trade. “As our imports are ballooning every year, private sector and the government need to collaborate on identifying ways to boost domestic production and increasing export of Nepali goods,” said Yadav.
