The proposed controversial merger between Ospreys and Scarlets, two of Wales’ most successful sides since regional rugby’s inception in 2003, is off after Scarlets confirmed on Wednesday that talks between the two clubs had broken down.
The Scarlets and Ospreys were expected to join forces, together with a new professional team being formed in north Wales, alongside existing Welsh regions Cardiff Blues and the Dragons, in Welsh rugby’s biggest domestic shake-up since the inception of regional sides 16 years ago.
