The government today sealed an outlet of Sangam Sweets, a popular local confectionery, in New Baneshwor after it was found to be using adulterated ingredients and harmful chemicals.
The market inspection team of Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DoFTQC) led by Food Investigation Officer Ishwor Subedi found the sweet outlet using prohibited chemicals in sweets to enhance its visual appeal. Similarly, it was found to be using date-expired ingredients and not maintaining hygiene around production area.
“We have sealed the outlet and barred it from selling its products until further notice,” said Subedi.
The sweet outlet was found to be using laundry and dry cleaning chemicals to make its products look attractive.
Moreover, the inspection team had found the sweet outlet using coconut powder, which have shelf life of four months, produced eight years ago.
Other flaws witnessed at the outlet included use of contaminated oil and ghee in the sweets.
“We have summoned the owner to furnish his clarification within three days. We will take necessary decisions after the clarification,” informed Subedi.
Sangam Sharma, a trader from Jhapa, owns Sangam Sweets.
Meanwhile, DoFTQC has also urged consumers to be more aware as malpractices are rampant in the domestic market ahead of the festive season.
