The three-member selection panel of ICC representative Aminul Islam, head coach Jagat Tamatta and skipper Paras Khadka has picked up the preliminary 18-member squad for next month’s ICC World Twenty20 Asia Qualifier ‘B’.
Khadka will lead the team that includes vice-captain Gyanendra Malla, Anil Kumar Sah, Basant Regmi, Binod Bhandari, Dipendra Singh Airee and Dipesh Shrestha. Sharad Vesawkar made his come back in the team following the hand injury, while Karan KC, Lalit Bhandari, Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi, Md Arif Sheikh, Pradeep Airee, Sagar Pun, Sandeep Lamichhane, Shahab Alam, Sompal Kami and Sunil Dhamala are also in the team.
Rohit Kumar Paudel was not considered for selection in the senior team as he was released to join the U-19 team for the U-19 Asia Cup to be held in Bangladesh later this month. The training camp will begin in Kathmandu on Thursday and the final 14-member team will be announced in due course, informed Technical Analyst and team manager Raman Shiwakoti.
Nepal are in East Sub-regional Group along with hosts Malaysia, Singapore, Bhutan, China, Myanmar and Thailand in the October 3–12 event. The International Cricket Council is organising a total of 12 regional qualifiers with 62 teams competing in five regions — three groups each in Africa and Europe and two apiece in Americas, Asia, East Asia Pacific.
Top 25 sides from these qualifiers will contest in five regional finals in 2019, with eight teams going on to compete in the 2020 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, along with the six lowest ranked sides from the ICC T20I Championship. Top three teams each in two Asian sub-regional qualifiers will advance to the regional finals, which will determine two Asian entrants to the 2020 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier.
