Lalitpur, June 23
Nepal Olympic Committee celebrated the Olympic Day with colourful ceremony at the Nepal Army Sports Complex here today.
Minister for Youth and Sports Jagat Bahadur Sunar and Honorary President of NOC Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan hoisted the national and IOC flags respectively during the closing ceremony.
A total of 116 tournaments and sports activities were organised in the nine-day celebrations under the aegis of Sports for All Commission of NOC. All the events and activities were organised to disseminate the core Olympic values — Excellence, Respect and Friendship.
The Olympic Day is celebrated on June 23 in the 207 member countries of International Olympic Committee with the theme of Sports is for everyone regardless of age, sex or colour.
Sports For all Commission President Bishnu Gopal Shrestha read out the message of IOC President Thomas Bach at the closing ceremony, while Olympians took part in the torch rally.
Minister Sunar announced the increment of Rs 1,000 in the monthly allowance of the Olympians. The Olympians, who have represented the country in Olympic Games, will now receive Rs 4,000 per month. Sunar also handed over memento to 65 association and institutions that participated in the Olympic Day celebrations.
NOC Vice-president Dhirendra Pradhan said the Tokyo 2020 carried a significant importance for Nepal.
“We started our Olympic Games participation from Tokyo back in 1964 and the next edition of the sporting extravaganza is also at the same city,” said Pradhan.
At the closing ceremony, Nepal Army band performed various national songs, along with the presentations from renowned singers, dancers, and students from different schools. National athletes, archers and judokas also demonstrated various skills including self-defence.
