Kathmandu, November 29
Nepal advanced to the semi-finals in women’s volleyball tournament under the 13th South Asian Games, thanks to India’s second straight victory, here at the NSC covered hall today.
Nepal, who were not in action following their one each win and loss in Group A, made it to the last four as group runners-up behind India, who defeated Bangladesh in straight sets for their second consecutive victory.
India registered a 25-8, 25-11, 25-9 victory against Bangladesh and finished as Group A winners with six points.
Nepal, who had began the campaign with a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh in the opening match before facing 3-0 defeat at the hands on India the next day, finished second in the group with three points. Bangladesh crashed out of the group with two defeats.
In semi-finals, Nepal will face Sri Lanka, who topped Group B. Maldives finished runners-up and will take on India for a place in the final.
The Group B was reduced to two teams after Pakistan pulled out of the tournament.
Men’s team out
Nepal national men’s volleyball team crashed out from the group stage following the 3-0 loss at the hands of India. The home side faced a 25-15, 25-13, 25-16 in the second and final Group A match.
Nepal had lost 3-2 against Bangladesh in the first match. India, who registered their second consecutive victory, made it to the semis as Group A winners, while Bangladesh advanced to the last four as runners-up with two points. Nepal ended up with one point. Despite being the national sport of the country, men’s volleyball has never won medal in the regional meet. Nepal’s maiden international medal came last year when they finished third in AVC Asian Central Zone Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship in Maldives.
