Kathmandu District Badminton Association is organising the Kathmandu Badminton Championship here at the Tribhuvan Memorial Hall on the premises of Tribhuvan University from August 6-9.
More than 900 players from the schools of the Kathmandu valley are expected to take part in the four-day championship which is being organise under the auspices of Private and Boarding School Organisation Nepal, informed the organisers at a press meet today.
The championship features five categories — U-12 and U-14 boys’ and girls’ singles and U-14 mixed doubles. Sports Science Department at TU is the co-organiser of the championship which is presented by Action Sports, which is supporting the tournament under its 12-month- 12-sport programme.
“We are organising this event to create a platform for new and upcoming badminton players,” said KDBA President Deepak Thapa.
“From this edition, we have included schools from Lalitpur and Bhaktapur making it a bigger event. And we are planning to go international in the years to come,” he added. “We are thankful to the sponsors and all of them who have joined hands with us in our efforts to make it a grand success.”
The top three pairs in mixed doubles event will receive Rs 40,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000, while the U-14 section winners will get Rs 30,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
Likewise, the top three players in U-12 category will earn Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
Nepal Badminton Association President Ramji Bahadur Shrestha lauded KDBA’s efforts in the overall development of the sport. “Badminton players have been performing well in national and international events and KDBA has made a significant contribution in making them successful shuttlers,” he added.
