Kathmandu, September 25
India defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 and advanced to the semi-finals of the SAFF U-18 Championship here at the Nepal APF Headquarters grounds today.
With the win, India accumulated four points from two matches and they were tied with Bangladesh in Group B. India and Bangladesh had played a goalless draw, while the latter had defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 in the league matches. The group winners were decided on lottery and India emerged the winners, finishing ahead of Bangladesh. Sri Lanka crashed out from group stage without scoring a single goal.
In the last match of league round, Gurkirat Singh scored a brace, while Aman Chhetri netted one for India.
After a goalless first half, Singh opened the scoring in the 65th minute and he doubled the tally in the 87th minute. Chhetri completed the scoring with his team’s third goal in the injury time of the match.
India will now face Group A runners-up Maldives, while Bangladesh will take on Group A winners Bhutan in Friday’s semi-final matches.
Two-time defending champions Nepal crashed out of league round after the home team finished at the bottom in Group A. Nepal played a 1-1 draw with Maldives in the tournament opener on September 20 before facing a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bhutan two days later.
