Juventus survive fright to move close to Serie A title

MILAN: Juventus fell behind to a first-half penalty before scoring three times after the break to beat Bologna 3-1 on Saturday and close in on their seventh successive Serie A title.

The Turin side capitalised on dreadful defending by the visitors as they moved seven points clear at the top and will clinch the title without playing on Sunday in the unlikely event that challengers Napoli lose at home to Torino.

Otherwise, they would need three more points from their last two games which include a home match against a Verona side who were relegated earlier on Saturday in a 4-1 defeat at AC Milan.

“Nothing is decided yet but this was definitely a big step in the right direction. We still need three points to be mathematically sure,” said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

“We made life difficult for ourselves with that mix-up in the penalty area but, fortunately, we reacted well.”

Bologna, comfortably sitting in midtable, took a shock lead in an incident which raised more questions about the use of the video assistant referee (VAR) which is being trialled in Serie A and other domestic leagues this season.

Lorenzo Crisetig was pushed over by Daniele Rugani as he intercepted a weak pass out of goal by Gianluigi Buffon and the referee pointed to the spot amid Juventus protests.

Simone Verdi stepped up for the penalty but had to wait for three minutes as the referee checked the incident with VAR officials.

There appeared to a communication problem as the referee went over to look at the pitchside monitor himself before confirming the decision. Verdi kept his cool and virtually rolled the ball into the goal as Buffon went the wrong way.

Juve were gifted an equaliser seven minutes into the second half when Bologna’s Sebastien de Maio turned Juan Cuadrado’s cross into his own goal.

Emil Krafth hit the post for Bologna but the visitors were sunk by more bad defending.

Sami Khedira headed Juve in front after goalkeeper Antonio Mirante flapped half-heartedly at a long looping Douglas Costa cross from the left and Paulo Dybala swept in the third from another Costa cross after the Brazilian won an aerial battle with Vasilis Torosidis far too easily.

“We had the chance to go back in front when it was 1-1 but we were imprecise, and that is the difference between ourselves and our opponents,” said Bologna coach Roberto Donadoni. “It’s a lesson for the future.”

Hakan Calhanoglu, Patrick Cutrone, Ignazio Abate and Fabio Borini shared the goals as Milan comfortably dispatched Verona in the early match at San Siro while Lee Seung-woo scored a consolation for the visitors.

Verona were left seven points adrift of safety with two matches to play and went straight back down after being promoted last season.

Hyderabad chase down Delhi to share IPL lead with Chennai

HYDERABAD: Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off their highest successful chase in this Indian Premier League and shared the overall lead with Chennai Super Kings on Saturday.

Kane Williamson and Yusuf Pathan led Hyderabad to 164-3 to beat Delhi Daredevils by seven wickets with one ball remaining. The Daredevils have won just three of their 10 games.

At Bangalore, spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Harbhajan Singh shared five wickets as Chennai Super Kings defeated the struggling Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets.

Hyderabad and Chennai have seven wins, but Hyderabad has a game in hand.

Chasing 164 to win, Alex Hales (45) and Shikhar Dhawan (33) provided Hyderabad a confident start of 76 runs in nine overs. But Delhi should have got rid of Hales in the second over when Glenn Maxwell dropped a sitter in the deep.

Legspinner Amit Mishra clean-bowled both openers in successive overs but Delhi missed another opportunity when Pathan was also dropped in the deep by Vijay Shankar in the 18th over before he scored.

With 14 required off the last over, Pathan hit 2-6-4-1 off Dan Christian’s first four deliveries, and Williamson finished off Delhi.

Williamson scored 32 not out and Pathan hit two sixes and two fours in 27 not out off 12 balls.

Delhi captain Shreyas Iyer opted to bat first and he (44) and Prithvi Shaw (65 off 36 balls) spearheaded them to 95-1 in 10 overs.

But Hyderabad struck back through legspinner Rashid Khan (2-23) to restrict Delhi to 163-5.

Left-hander Shaw mistimed a sweep and gave a simple catch at short third man, while Iyer flicked Siddarth Kaul to midwicket and was dismissed in the 16th over.

In Bangalore, Jadeja picked up 3-18 and Harbhajan took 2-22 to restrict the home side to 127-9.

Chennai reached 128-4 in 18 overs with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (31 not out) smashing three sixes off legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal in a final over costing 22 runs.

“On surfaces such as these, Jadeja bowls very well … and so did we as a team,” Dhoni said. “Identifying our death bowler before the knockouts is the only thing we’re worried about and that’s why we’re making a few changes.”

Parthiv Patel, playing his first game of the season, top-scored for Bangalore with 53 off 41 balls and Tim Southee’s unbeaten 36 off 26 gave the total some respectability. No other Bangalore batsmen reached double figures.

AB de Villiers (1) returned after missing two games due to fever but lasted only four deliveries as the South African was stumped off the first delivery he faced against Harbhajan.

Jadeja clean-bowled captain Virat Kohli (8) off his first ball as the batsman tried to chop the left-arm spinner’s arm ball but missed it completely.

Chennai’s target was eased by some sloppy Bangalore fielding, with wicketkeeper Patel and Chahal dropping Dwayne Bravo (14 not out).

Ambati Rayudu (32 off 25) and Suresh Raina (25 off 21) added 44 runs for the second wicket before Raina was smartly caught by Southee at the boundary. Rayudu fell to legspinner Murugan Ashwin’s first delivery.

Dhoni and Bravo shared a winning 48-run unbeaten stand to hand Bangalore its sixth defeat.

“Dropped catches don’t help,” said Kohli, whose team has only three victories.

“We know it’s a tough road ahead. We need to win probably four out of five (matches). These situations bring the best out of us.”

Pandya, Sharma stun Kings XI Punjab to keep Mumbai alive

0

INDORE: Allrounder Krunal Pandya and Rohit Sharma blitzed 56 runs off 21 balls for Mumbai Indians to stun Kings XI Punjab by six wickets and stay in Indian Premier League playoffs contention on Friday.

The visiting Indians were in dire straits when Pandya’s brother, Hardik Pandya, lost his middle slump to a wild swing at Andrew Tye in the 16th over. Krunal Pandya joined Sharma with 55 required from 27 balls.

Krunal flicked Tye to the boundary off his first ball, and he and Sharma blew away Punjab to win with six balls to spare.

Krunal hit 31 not out off 12 balls, including four fours and two sixes, and Sharma made 24 not out off 15 balls.

They totaled 176-4 in reply to Punjab’s 174-6 and kept Mumbai mathematically alive with only their third win.

“We have been in winning positions in eight games, but couldn’t finish it,” Krunal said. “It feels good to contribute with the bat. Anything is chase-able here because the ground is small.”

Chasing 175, Mumbai got off to a quick start thanks to Evin Lewis (10) and Suryakumar Yadav (57 off 42 balls) putting on 38 runs for the opening stand.

Lewis and Ishan Kishan (25) didn’t help the strike-rate much, and both were dismissed by Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2-37).

Yadav holed out off Marcus Stoinis (1-37) after scoring his half-century from 34 balls, as Mumbai’s middle-order came under pressure.

Hardik Pandya (23 off 13 balls) came out at No. 4 to counter Punjab’s spin resources, but his dismissal reduced Mumbai to 120-4 in the 16th over.

Enter his brother.

Chris Gayle scored his third half-century of the competition, 50 off 38 balls, after Punjab was made to bat first at its new home ground.

Lokesh Rahul (24) and Gayle put on a quick 54 but they lost momentum after Rahul’s dismissal, as Yuvraj Singh (14), promoted to No. 3, failed to get going.

Gayle, though, was unperturbed as he hit six fours and two sixes. He was dismissed by Ben Cutting, and Punjab found it tough to match the scoring rate.

Yuvraj was run out in a mix-up with Karun Nair (23), who holed out in a bid to accelerate the innings.

Axar Patel’s (13) pinch-hitting didn’t work, and it was left to Marcus Stoinis (29 not out off 15 balls) and Mayank Agarwal (11) to produce a good finish.

They put on 29 runs off 17 balls for the sixth wicket, with Stoinis taking 22 runs off Hardik Pandya’s (1-44) last over. Yet, it wasn’t enough for Punjab to return to winning ways.

“We didn’t get enough runs on the board. If not for Stoinis, we wouldn’t have got 174,” skipper Ravichandran Ashwin said. “If we keep on playing like this, we will get the necessary points to qualify for the knockouts.”

LONDON: West Bromwich Albion held on to their slim hopes of avoiding relegation after a stoppage-time goal by Jake Livermore gave the Midlands club a lifeline thanks to a 1-0 Premier League home win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

With one game remaining, West Brom moved up to 19th on 31 points from 37 matches, one behind Southampton and two adrift of Swansea who both have games in hand ahead of a thrilling climax to the relegation battle.

Former Tottenham midfielder Livermore struck deep into stoppage time to send the home fans at The Hawthorns into raptures after both sides had missed good chances in a scrappy game dominated by the visitors.

The home team’s keeper Ben Foster made several telling saves while West Brom’s Jay Rodriguez had a header cleared off the line by Jan Vertonghen and striker Salomon Rondon scuffed his shot from a good position.

Lambert vows Stoke will bounce back after relegation

LONDON: Stoke City manager Paul Lambert vowed that his side would bounce back into the Premier League after their relegation was confirmed on Saturday with a 2-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace.

The Scot, who took over from Mark Hughes in January but failed to revive the ailing Potters, made it sound as if he still wanted to be the man to lead them back into the top flight after a familiar dispiriting afternoon.

“I love it here it’s brilliant,” Lambert told the BBC. “It’s probably not too dissimilar to Glasgow where I’m from — a hard-working place — and we have to bounce back up now.

“The club is too big not to. It will regroup and it’s got the right infra-structure in place to do it.”

Stoke’s fate was sealed with a familiar mixed performance — plenty of effort but a lack of bite and quality up front — as they surrendered a lead given to them by Xherdan Shaqiri’s free kick just before the break.

After the interval, though, Palace dominated to win with goals from James McArthur and Patrick van Aanholt and end the Potters’ 10-year stay in the Premier League.

Despite the disappointment of overseeing a 13th league match without a win — Stoke’s worst top-flight sequence in 34 years — Lambert applauded the efforts of his side.

He even suggested they would have been safe if they had played with this sort of commitment for the entire campaign.

“We lacked a bit more quality at the top end of the pitch. If the lads had been playing the way they did for me all season they probably wouldn’t be in this position,” Lambert said.

“I can’t ask for more commitment. The story of the 15 games I’ve been here has been of exceptional effort. The club is in a good position to rebuild and either way they had to rebuild.”

The Stoke fans, in familiar fashion, never stopped cheering on their side amid the disappointment, leaving Lambert to applaud them.

“They’ve backed us to the hilt and I feel for them. Even after the game they waited to cheer us on,” he said
