ROME: Italy coach Roberto Mancini plans to talk to long-excluded striker Mario Balotelli about a possible return to the national team as he attempts to rebuild a squad that failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in six decades.

Balotelli has not played for Italy since the 2014 World Cup, but he featured under Mancini at both Inter Milan and Manchester City.

“Mario is an Italian player. We’ll definitely consider him and we’ll probably call him,” Mancini said at his presentation on Tuesday. “He’s one of those players who we want to see back in the form he showed at the (2012) European Championship with (former Italy coach Cesare) Prandelli.”

At Euro 2012, Balotelli’s goals helped Italy reach the final. He scored 13 goals in 33 appearances for the Azzurri and at 27 is coming off a strong season in France with Nice.

Mancini signed a two-year contract with an option to stay on through the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He will reportedly earn 2 million euros ($2.4 million) per season, accepting a massive pay cut compared to what he earned at Zenit St. Petersburg, his most recent job.

Mancini left Zenit on Monday by mutual consent.

“He gave up significant financial opportunities to do so,” Italian soccer federation extraordinary commissioner Roberto Fabbricini said. “This is testimony to his complete determination and desire to take on this job.”

Mancini has his sights set on the 2020 European Championship.

“We haven’t won the Euros in many years (Italy’s only title came in 1968) and that, apart from the Nations League, will be the principal goal,” Mancini said.

Mancini is replacing Gian Piero Ventura, who was fired in November after four-time champion Italy lost a World Cup playoff to Sweden.

“I think that it’s the right moment for me. It’s a difficult time and there’s a lot to do,” Mancini said at the national team’s training center in Florence. “I want to bring Italy back to where it belongs — on top of the world and Europe.”

With calls to bring in younger players to the national team, Mancini supports a youth movement.

“It’s important that the players who reach the national team do it with heart, because every young player dreams of reaching this squad,” Mancini said. “There will be space for everyone who plays well but we’ve got to also build for the upcoming years, so age will count.

“But if the ‘veterans’ like (Daniele) De Rossi are still the best when we have to play big matches then they will be called up.”

Mancini, a former Italy player, has coached Fiorentina, Lazio, Inter, City and Galatasaray to titles. However, his Zenit team finished the Russian league in a disappointing fifth place.

Mancini will make his debut in a friendly against Saudi Arabia in Switzerland on May 28, ahead of more friendlies against France and the Netherlands. His first official match will come in the new Nations League in September.

Kaski Coordination Committee of Nepal Sports Journalists Forum today unveiled the nominees of third TVS Apache Pokhara Sports Award slated for June 1.

NSJF Kaski announced the nominees of the Player of the Year male, female, coach and emerging player categories during a press meet here today. Weightlifter Kamal Bahadur Adhikari, cricketer Karan KC and archer Tilak Pun Magar were nominated in male category. The winner of this category will get a TVS Apache motorbike and trophy.

Karate player Bimala Nepali, hockey player Kamala Pun and archer Keshari Ale were nominated in women’s category and the winner will get TVS Wego scooter and trophy.

Athlete Bibek Adhikari, kabaddi player Buddhi Maya Magar and cricketer Meg Bahadur Sen made it to the nomination in emerging player category. Weightlifting’s Jeevan Ghimire, cricket’s Raju Praju and karate’s Shiva Bahadur Gurung were nominated in coach category. The winners of the emerging player and coach categories will receive Rs 15,000 and trophy each.

NSJF Kaski President Keshav Pathak informed that winners of the four categories will get Samsung mobile phone each from Worldwide Connection of Chipledhunga. The organisers will also honour Kaski District Badminton Association with the best sports association award with Rs 10,000 and a journalist working for tourism sports with Rs 15,000.

NSJF Kaski will felicitate Birendra Singh Gurung with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution in the development in sports infrastructure. Prithvi Narayan Campus chief Professor Gurung introduced hockey in Pokhara. He also played crucial role in the preparing lawn tennis and cricket infrastructure in Pokhara.

The organisers will also fete singer Binod Baniya in honour of his contribution in the development of sport through sports related song.

Sports fraternity pays tribute to Mani B Shah

The sports fraternity today paid tribute to legendary football player Mani Bikram Shah, who passed away yesterday at the age of 51.

Shah, popularly known as Nepali Maradona in football fraternity, breathed his last on Monday evening at the Norvic International Hospital. Shah, who had been suffering from liver problems for a long time, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday. Shah’s body was kept at the Dasharath Stadium where political leaders and sports personalities paid last tribute before he was cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat. He is survived by wife and a son.

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and leaders Prakash Man Singh and Gagan Thapa, CPN UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, Minister for Youth and Sports Jagat Bahadur Sunar, CNN Hero Anuradha Koirala, National Sports Council Member Secretary Keshab Kumar Bista, Nepal Olympic Committee General Secretary Lama Tendi Sherpa, All Nepal Football Association President Karma Tsering Sherpa and other officials, former ANFA President Ganesh Thapa, football players and athletes among other sports personalities paid homage to Shah.

Shah had made his national team debut at the age of 17 during the second South Asian Federation Games in 1985. He ruled Nepali football for 13 years before retiring in 1998. Legendary Shah was of the key member of the national team that won gold medal in the sixth SAF Games in Bangladesh in 1993. The star midfielder of his time, Shah scored six international goals and earned 48 caps from the national jersey.

ANFA Honorary President Tashi Ghale said Shah would remain immortal in Nepali sports. “He spent his entire life for Nepali football and played crucial role in 1993 SAF Games,” said Ghale, who lauded Shah’s contribution in guiding Manang Marshyangdi Club to A Division from D Division. Ghale, who was coach of Shah, said Shah was talented footballer from childhood. “The Nepali team had participated in the Princess Cup U-13 Tournament in Thailand. The Thai Royal family was so impressed with his game against Japan that they invited the Nepali team for dinner.”

Similarly, Birat Jung Shahi, who played along with Shah for MMC and national team, said the demise of Shah was unbelievable. “I am not been able to convince me that he is no more with us,” said Shahi. “Shah was one of the best footballers. It was a confirm goal if he got the ball inside the box or took a free kick outside the penalty area,” added Shahi, who joined MMC along with Shah after Thamel-XI got suspended.

Similarly, former national team skipper Anil Gurung said Shah was the idol for him. “Mani sir was the best footballer and he is my idol. I followed him since my childhood and I was impressed with his style of play. He used to teach me in every game I played at the Dasharath Stadium. I was shocked when I heard that he was no more,” said Gurung, the former MMC skipper.

Legendary footballer Bhim Thapa said Shah was a star player in South Asia, not only Nepal. “Shah had inborn talent and coaches just showed him the way. I have watched him play closely and he Shah was South Asian super star,” said Thapa.

Likewise, Shah’s room partner in international events, goalkeeper Ajar Manandhar was emotional and could not stop tears from his eyes. “We played together at national team, age-group and MMC and we used to stay in the same room. For me, losing Mani Shah is like losing one of my body parts,” he added.

Former national team skipper Hari Khadka described Shah as an extraordinary player. “Nepal did not have a player of that caliber before him and I doubt there will be any in future,” said Khadka.

HETAUDA: Hetauda Cricket Club defeated Hetauda Cricket Academy by 13 runs in the final of the Hetauda Cup T20 Cricket Tournament on Tuesday.

Batting first, HCC scored 113 runs but HCA managed only 100 runs. Winners and runners-up got Rs 35,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.

HCC’s Hasim Ansari was named the player of the tournament and he got Rs 8,000.

Similarly, Makawanpur Cricket Academy’s Abhishek Jha and HCA’s Sansh Sheikh were named the best bowler and batsman respectively.

They earned Rs 5,000 each.

The government is preparing to raise customs duty on rice, especially branded rice that comparatively costs higher in the domestic market. The Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management and Cooperatives has recommended to the Ministry of Finance to raise customs duty on imported (branded) rice by 10 per cent to 15 per cent through the upcoming budget for the fiscal 2018-19.

The government currently levies five per cent import duty on rice.

According to MoALMC officials, it has recommend that MoF raise customs duty to this effect on rice with grains above seven millimetres in size.

By increasing import duty on such rice, the government intends to promote Nepali rice over foreign brands.

Despite being an agricultural nation with production of paddy increasing in recent years, Nepal has to import huge volumes of rice every year.

In 2016-17, the country imported rice worth more than Rs 24 billion and the import bill of rice is expected to exceed that in the ongoing fiscal. “The plan is to increase import tax only on branded rice and not on normal rice, which is in high demand in the domestic market. This ensures that normal customers will not be affected despite increment in import taxes,” said an official at MoALMC. He added that the government also planned to bring down import duty on rice with grains below seven millimetres in size, the consumption of which is high in the country.

However, officials at MoF hastened to add that the proposal of MoALMC to raise import duty on certain rice brands would be examined thoroughly before any decision was taken.

Consumer rights activists too opined that hiking customs duty on rice was necessary not only to substitute import and promote Nepali agricultural production, but also to discourage the increasing trend of Indian traders exporting Nepali rice under their own brand name.

“Our inspections at customs points have revealed that Indian traders first import Nepali paddy and rice as they are cheaper compared to Indian products and then export them to the Nepali market under an Indian brand name,” said Madhav Timalsina, president of Consumers’ Right Investigation Forum. He added that higher customs duty on imported rice will ultimately increase the demand for Nepali rice and boost production of paddy in the country.
