Azarenka shines on Madrid return as top seeds cruise

0

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka won her first match on clay in two years in the first round of the Madrid Open on Sunday as she prepares to compete in the French Open for the first time since 2016.

The Belarusian, who missed a large part of last season due to a custody battle over her son, kicked off her Madrid Open campaign with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Serbian Aleksandra Krunic in the first round.

“… it’s my first match in, I don’t know, two years or whatever on clay. So that’s definitely not easy. But I’m happy that I could find a way to win, produce some good tennis at the moment,” Azarenka said courtside.

“There is definitely a lot of things that I can improve. But it’s a start.”

Azarenka will be joined in the second round by world number one and defending champion Simona Halep, Spaniard Garbine Muguruza and world number two Caroline Wozniacki, all of whom comfortably won their opening round encounters.

Top seed Halep made quick work of Ekaterina Makarova, beating the Russian 6-1 6-0 while Wozniacki was almost as dominant in her 6-3 6-1 win over Australian Daria Gavrilova.

Muguruza, the 2016 French Open winner and reigning Wimbledon champion, ousted China‘s Peng Shuai with a 6-4 6-2 and will be aiming to progress past the second round of her home tournament for the first time. Japan’s Naomi Osaka continued her underwhelming record on outdoor clay as she lost to China‘s Zhang Shuai. World number 10 Petra Kvitova, who won the Prague Open on Saturday, brushed aside Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko 6-1 6-2.

Maria Sharapova also made a strong start with the 2014 champion outclassing Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-4 6-1.

INDORE: Afghanistan 17-year-old spinner Mujeebur Rahman snapped three wickets in four balls and propelled Kings XI Punjab to a six-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League on Sunday.

Earlier, all-rounder Hardik Pandya kept defending champion Mumbai Indians in contention with a 13-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at home.

Mujeeb’s 3-27 restricted Rajasthan to 152-9 as its multi-million dollar signings were baffled by the young Afghan spinner after Kings XI captain Ravichandran Ashwin opted to field. Kings XI then scored 155-4 in 18.4 overs.

Mujeeb started Rajasthan’s slide when Ben Stokes was caught at long off after Mayank Agarwal leapt close to the boundary edge, caught the ball over his head and while going off balance relayed the ball back to Manoj Tiwari to complete the catch.

Top scorer Jos Buttler (51) was outfoxed with a carrom ball and was caught behind before Mujeeb clean bowled Jofra Archer with a perfect googly off the next ball as Rajasthan lost its last six wickets for 52 runs.

Kings XI’s opener Lokesh Rahul (84 off 54 balls) continued his supreme run of form and, despite losing Chris Gayle and Agarwal early, he carried the team to its sixth victory in the tournament.

“For me, this is the first knock that I would be really satisfied with because I won the game for the team,” Rahul said.

Rahul hit seven fours and three sixes in his third half-century in this year’s IPL and shared a 68-run stand with Marcus Stoinis, who remained unbeaten on 23.

Kings XI is now third with 12 points from six victories, two behind leaders Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings.

Rajasthan is at the bottom of the table with only three wins from nine matches.

“It wasn’t easy to bat on here, but we needed 170-175,” Rajasthan captain Ajinkya Rahane said.

“We need to learn from this, it’s our ninth game, the bowlers are doing well but the batsmen, including me, haven’t performed well enough.”

In Mumbai, Hardik hit an unbeaten 35 off 20 balls to lift his team to 181-4 after Kolkata captain Dinesh Karthik chose to field.

Hardik then took 2-19 to restrict Kolkata to 168-6 as Mumbai moved to fifth with eight points from four wins. Kolkata slipped to fourth with 10 points after winning five of its 10 games.

Kolkata seemed to be cruising to victory after Robin Uthappa (54) capitalized on an early dropped catch to hit his first half-century in this year’s IPL.

Uthappa and Nitish Rana (31) featured in an 84-run third wicket stand after Mayank Markande dropped an easy chance at mid-on when Uthappa was on 4.

Uthappa pounced on the chance, hitting six fours and three sixes, including four successive boundaries in one over off Ben Cutting.

But Markande broke through in the 13th over when Uthappa holed out in the deep to Cutting and Hardik dismissed Rana in the next over to reduce Kolkata to 115-4.

Hard-hitting Andre Russell (9) and Sunil Narine (5) also perished while going for big shots and, despite Karthik’s unbeaten 36 off 26 balls, Mumbai always looked in control to deny Kolkata’s chase.

Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav (59 off 39) and Evin Lewis (43 off 28) provided Mumbai a rapid start of 91 off 56 before Kolkata hit back through Russell (2-12) and Narine (2-35).

Lewis sliced Russell’s slower delivery to short third man before the West Indian seamer found an edge off Yadav, who hit seven fours and two sixes.

Narine accounted for the wickets of captain Rohit Sharma (11) and Krunal Pandya (14) as both batsmen attempted extravagant shots before Hardik’s late blitz provided Mumbai enough runs to defend.
