Kvitova prevails to claim record third Madrid title

  • Czech turns back Bertens in three sets
  • Match lasts almost three hours
  • ‘It feels sweet and weird,’ says Kvitova

MADRID: Petra Kvitova outlasted the unseeded Kiki Bertens to win a thrilling Madrid Open final on Saturday 7-6(8-6) 4-6 6-3 and become the first player to lift the trophy for a third time.

Czech Kvitova, ranked 10th in the world, struck the first blow in a tense match which lasted two hours 52 minutes by edging the tie-break at the end of a gruelling 75-minute first set, taking advantage of a third set point when Bertens found the net.

The Dutchwoman had beaten Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova in a sparkling week in the Spanish capital to reach her first premier mandatory final and recovered well from surrendering the first set to take the second.

She led by a break in the third but let her advantage slip and Kvitova broke twice in a row to take a 4-2 lead in the decider.

Bertens broke back to make it 4-3 but lost her next service game and Kvitova served out the final game to love, sealing victory when Bertens hit the tramlines with a backhand.

In doing so, she took her landmark third title, surpassing the two each won by Serena Williams and Simona Halep in Madrid, which established a women’s section in 2009.

“Everything what I had in my body, I just tried to put it out, even if it was very, very tough today,” Kvitova said.

“She played great tennis. It was a big fight. We both should be very proud of this beautiful final we played today.”

Bertens paid tribute to her opponent and agreed with Kvitova that the final had been a thrilling spectacle.

“It was a great final. I had some chances in the beginning of the third, but didn’t take it. Petra was playing some unbelievable shots there. So, yeah, credit to her today,” she said.

Twice-Wimbledon winner Kvitova was forced out of action for more than five months last year after her racket hand was stabbed by a burglar who broke into her apartment in December 2016.

But she has returned with a vengeance, winning the St Petersburg Ladies Trophy, the Qatar Total Open and the Prague Open this year before making history in Madrid.

“It feels sweet and weird as well,” added Kvitova.

“I didn’t really expect that, even the same time last year. Even coming from Prague last week, I didn’t think I could be in the final, winning another trophy. My body is exhausted, so I’m pretty surprised.

“Every title feels great. Winning three times here in Madrid, it means something.”

Bench-warming to heart-warming, Lamichhane realises IPL dream

0

NEW DELHI:  Sandeep Lamichhane spent 11 matches warming the Delhi Daredevils bench in this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL) and the spin bowler’s patience was finally rewarded when the Nepalese teenager made an impressive tournament debut on Saturday.

The 17-year-old became the first player from his nation to land an IPL deal in January but it seemed like an endless wait for the tiny Himalayan nation to see one of their own play in Twenty20 cricket‘s most glamorous league across the border.

When his chance finally arrived at Feroz Shah Kotla, the leg-spinner gave a good account of himself by returning figures of 4-0-25-1 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, who went on to win the match.

“Obviously (performance) doesn’t matter if your team is not winning. I’m still happy and looking forward to giving my best again,” Lamichhane told reporters afterwards.

Lamichhane admitted he had been flooded with messages of support after appearing in the IPL two months after Nepal secured their One-Day International status.

“I’ve got lots of messages from fans all over the world. They were like waiting to see me on the ground, to have a match. Fortunately I got this opportunity today,” the spinner said.

“It was fantastic. I have been training hard with (head coach) Ricky Ponting. He has been an exceptional coach. I’ve learned many things from him. I’m really enjoying this moment.”

The spin prodigy made his national team debut at 16 and was Nepal’s highest wicket-taker at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke played an important role in his career, inviting the youngster to play club cricket in Sydney.

“My little buddy @IamSandeep25 gets his first opportunity in the IPL. What an amazing story,” Clarke tweeted.

Lamichhane was pressed into service immediately on Saturday, opening the Daredevils attack and striking in his second over, trapping Parthiv Patel leg-before for six.

He nearly dismissed AB de Villiers (72 not out) in a similar fashion with his next delivery but the South African not only survived but went on to see Bangalore home in unison with India skipper Virat Kohli (70).

“It was a great opportunity bowling against the top two batsmen in the world. I got to learn a lot from them. I really enjoyed bowling to them,” Lamichhane said.

The Daredevils may be out of the playoff race but Lamichhane values what he learned at the team over the last one-and-half months.

“There is a long way to go,” he said. “I have to be grounded, I have to stay humble, because I have to play a lot of cricket.” (Reporting by Amlan Chakraborty in New Delhi; Editing by John O’Brien)

After the madness of Azerbaijan we’re in Spain for the start of the European leg of what is shaping up to be a thrilling F1 season. Lewis Hamilton emerged from the Red Bull chaos in Baku to record his first victory of the season in its fourth race. He holds a four point lead in the drivers’ standings from Sebastian Vettel, who won the first two grands prix of the season before Daniel Ricciardo’s masterclass in China. Hamilton will be on pole at the Circuit de Catalunya, despite saying before this weekend that he had ‘zero comfortability’ with his car.

The British world champion won from pole here last year, and will be difficult to beat at a track where overtaking can be tricky, but he was only four-hundredths of a second faster than his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas in qualifying. The Ferraris of Vettel and Kimi Raikonnen make up the second row, with those dastardly Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen ready to rumble from fifth and sixth on the grid. The start could be quite something.

Inter loses in Serie A and looks set to miss Champs League

MILAN: Inter Milan players were in tears after losing at home to Sassuolo 2-1 in Serie A on Saturday left their chances of qualifying for the Champions League in tatters.

Inter captain Mauro Icardi, Rafinha and other players fell to the ground after the final whistle, several with tears running down their face.

“This defeat hurts us a lot but the team did well,” Inter coach Luciano Spalletti said. “The players were destroyed in the dressing room, it really meant a lot to them and they gave their all.

“Sassuolo did what they had to do and we congratulate them for having won a difficult match. … We went behind but we had all the time to get back into the match … Consigli is a top-class goalkeeper and tonight he showed the talent he has.”

The result meant Roma qualified for the Champions League — no matter how it fares against Juventus on Sunday — as it was four points ahead of Inter, with one round remaining.

Inter remained two points behind fourth-placed Lazio, which can secure a spot in the Champions League with a victory over relegation-threatened Crotone on Sunday.

Inter and Lazio play each other in the last round.

Having already secured safety, Sassuolo had pride to play for and took a surprise lead in the 24th minute when Matteo Politano waited for the wall to jump before rolling a free kick under it and into the bottom right corner.

Goalkeeper Andrea Consigli did well to deny Marcelo Brozovic and Antonio Candreva and pulled off a fantastic stop to keep out Mauro Icardi’s effort on the stroke of halftime.

Icardi had the ball in the net moments earlier but it was ruled out for offside.

Consigli continued to perform heroics after the break and Domenico Berardi doubled Sassuolo’s lead in the 72nd, beating a defender before firing powerfully into the back of the net.

Rafinha netted his first goal for Inter 10 minutes from time with a low shot which went in off the base of the post.

The Nerazzurri layed seige to the goal but could not find a way past Consigli.

GOODBYE

Demoted Benevento marked its final home match in Serie A by beating Genoa 1-0.

Cheick Diabate scored four minutes from time, thanks to a great run from Enrico Brignola, who started in his own half and shrugged off two tackles before rolling across for his teammate.

Home goalkeeper Christian Puggioni pulled off some fine saves

Hats off to Leinster after giving Racing’s beret brigade the boot | Paul Rees

Leinster had the nous to edge a cagey Champions Cup final that looked to be heading for extra time until Racing 92 cracked

Racing’s players ran on to the pitch wearing berets, a nod to the host city that is regarded as the capital of the Basque region. They did the same 31 years ago when playing a Top 14 match in Bayonne, a period when some of the club’s players formed the Eden Park leisure clothing brand. When they faced Brive in April 1987, they took to the field in blazers and pink bow ties, and they sported harem pants the following week against Toulouse.

They were known then as the showbiz kids but a cup final comes under the factual rather than entertainment category. With heavy rain falling, Dan Carter withdrawing from the bench on Friday with a hamstring strain and the player he was understudying, Pat Lambie, lasting two minutes before he suffered a knee injury, black seemed the appropriate colour for Racing. It was so only at the end, having matched Leinster for every stride.
