National Supply Company in offing

0

Kathmandu, May 9

The government is preparing to merge the ill-fated National Trading Ltd (NTL) with Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) to form an autonomous National Supply Company (NSC).

A highly-placed source at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies (MoICS) informed The Himalayan Times that an independent committee of experts is currently studying the prospects of merging these two entities and operation modality of the yet-to-be-formed supply company.

“We are preparing to recommend the government to merge these two entities through the upcoming budget speech for the 2018-19 fiscal year,” said the MoICS source, adding that the two government firms will start joint operation after this plan gets a nod from the government.

Citing that NTL had been persistently incurring losses and adding financial burden on the government, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) had recommended the then Ministry of Supplies (MoS) to shut down NTL in January and had given voluntary retirement to 264 NTL staffs.

The government had then formed a committee to hold due diligence audit of NTL to identify actual property of NTL. As per the committee’s preliminary study, NTL has property worth almost Rs 25 billion across the country.

“After shutting down NTL, property of the company worth billions of rupees has remained unused. We are thinking of ways to utilise them and one of the options is to merge NTL with NFC,” informed Mukunda Poudyal, joint-secretary at MoICS.

Sources informed that the National Supply Company will look after issues related to supply of essential goods in the domestic market. Such goods include rice and other food grains, sugar and different machinery equipment.

“Both NTL and NFC have warehouses across the country. If they are merged, it would be easier for the government to store ample essential goods for emergency purposes,” said Poudyal, adding that formation of an autonomous government-owned supply company is necessary also to ensure smooth supply of essential goods across the country, especially in remote areas.

In the long run, the National Supply Company could also enter into fuel supply business and diversify Nepal’s fuel trade, as per MoICS officials.

Earlier, the government had also discussed other possibilities for NTL, including merging it with Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC), allowing NTL to start fuel trade with China, developing five-star hotels on its property or developing international standard exhibition halls on the premises of NTL.

‘Do not provide telecom services without licence’

0

Kathmandu, May 9

In the backdrop of complaints registered at Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) citing that various firms have been delivering internet services without acquiring licences, the telecommunication sector regulator today published a notice warning against such illegal activities.

Moreover, NTA has started investigating the issue and has said that providing any sort of telecommunication services without acquiring licence from NTA is an offence.

“We have already deployed special investigation teams to cross-check if complaints are true. In case we find any firm catering telecommunication services, including internet service, without acquiring NTA’s permission, the firm will be subject to legal action,” said Min Prasad Aryal, spokesperson for NTA.

As per the Telecommunications Act, 1997, operation of telecommunication services is strictly prohibited without obtaining the licence to do so.

However, act has not talked about the type of action that could be taken against those operating telecommunication services without acquiring licences.

As per Aryal, NTA management will decide on the action that could be taken against such offences if they really exist.

Aryal said that delivering telecommunication services without acquiring licence will not only affect government’s revenue, but will directly impact the competitive growth of the telecommunication industry in the country.

AC Milan’s mistakes hand Italian Cup title to Juventus

ROME: AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma gifted two goals and Nikola Kalinic added an own-goal in a nightmare 4-0 defeat for the Rossoneri as Juventus claimed a record fourth straight Italian Cup title on Wednesday. While the 19-year-old Donnarumma could not be blamed for Medhi Benatia’s opener in the final, his mistakes led to the ensuing goals from Douglas Costa and Benatia. Then Kalinic headed a corner into his own net.

After the final whistle, Milan captain Leonardo Bonucci and Juventus counterpart Gianluigi Buffon attempted to console Donnarumma.

“We have to accept it and realize we made our own errors,” Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso said.

It was the first of two titles that Juventus is hoping to celebrate over the space of four days at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Bianconeri can clinch a record-extending seventh consecutive Serie A title with only a draw against Roma on Sunday.

“Now we have to ensure the Scudetto mathematically and enjoy this extraordinary season,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said.

Juventus has won a total of 13 Italian Cups, at least four more than any other team.

For Benatia, the brace served as redemption after he was blamed for a goal in a 1-0 loss to Serie A rival Napoli last month.

“After my error on the marking for Kalidou Koulibaly, everyone said I was useless,” Benatia said. “I haven’t become fantastic now and I wasn’t useless then. … I gave my contribution, nothing more.”

Buffon, who is expected to retire at the end of the season, far outperformed Donnarumma, who is considered his protege.

Milan, meanwhile, missed out on a chance to justify its preseason spending spree and take home a trophy ahead of likely punishment from UEFA for financial fair play violations.

The last time Juventus had beaten Milan by at least a four-goal margin came more than 20 years ago — in a 6-1 away win in Serie A in 1997.

“The guys had an extraordinary game and deserved this win, taking nothing away from Milan, who had a good first half,” Allegri said. “In games like this you need a little time to get into gear, but we found the passing lines, the spaces opened up and naturally the technique emerged.”

After a slow-paced first half, Juventus took control when Benatia headed in from a corner.

Donnarumma then had Costa’s shot on his fingers but the ball fell through his hands.

Three minutes later, Donnarumma was preparing to collect a header from Mario Mandzukic but it again slipped off his fingers and Benatia was waiting to pounce on it.

Milan came closest when Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi nearly scored an own-goal, hitting the post with a failed clearance.

Kalinic, who has not reached expectations at Milan, then added to the misfortune by finding his own net with his back to the goal by the near post as he attempted to defend a corner.

Buffon preserved the clean sheet with successive saves on Manuel Locatelli and Fabio Borini.

LONDON: Tottenham secured qualification for next season’s Champions League after beating Newcastle 1-0 through Harry Kane’s second-half goal to move into third place in the Premier League on Wednesday.

With Chelsea drawing 1-1 with Huddersfield on the other side of London, Tottenham is guaranteed a top-four finish heading into its last game of the season — at home to Leicester on Sunday.

Spurs will be in the Champions League for the third straight season, playing host to Europe’s elite competition in a new stadium being built on the site of its White Hart Lane ground. They have played this season at Wembley Stadium.

“It is a massive achievement to qualify again,” Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said. “I want to congratulate the players … It is a massive effort, 38 games away from home is a huge effort.

“Next season, it will be fantastic for Tottenham to be playing in a new stadium and in the Champions League.”

Kane curled in the winner from the edge of the area in the 50th minute for his 28th league goal of the season, leaving the striker three behind Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah in the race to become the Premier League’s top scorer.

Tottenham is two points above fourth-place Liverpool.
