DAMAULI: Bhim Bahadur Gurung of Arughat, Gorkha won the title of Ligligkot Siranchokkot Gorkha Durbar Open Marathon Championship held in Gorkha on Wednesday.
Gurung completed the 42-kilometre race in just three hours, 17 minutes and two seconds, leaving behind other 114 participants. Gurung bagged a cash prize of Rs 150,000 along with medals and certificates.
First runner-up Durga Raj Budha of Rukum finished the marathon in three hours, 17 minutes and 45 seconds, receiving Rs 100,000 cash prize. Similarly, Nepal Army personnel Sabin Tamang of Ranbam Dal Battalion grabbed the third position and Rs 50,000 cash by completing the race in three hours, 30 minutes and two seconds.
All marathon runners securing up to the tenth position were each awarded cash prizes, medals and certificates.
According to the mayor of Palungtar Municipality, Dipak Babu Kandel, the marathon was organised to promote historical Ligligkot and develop sports tourism in the area. The marathon was jointly organised by Randal Singh Battalion of Nepal Army, Gorkha Municipality, Palungtar Municipality and Siranchok Rural Municipality.
The race started from Ligligkot of Palungtar Municipality and passed through Chitrepokhari-Chebetar-Pashlang Chautari route and ended at the Gorkha Durbar, informed Ransingh Dal Battalion chief, Major Ujjwal KC.
The marathon also aimed to promote the upcoming Visit Nepal 2020 campaign, claimed deputy mayor of Palungtar Municipality, Pampha Basel.
