Kathmandu, September 21

The government is preparing to enforce a ban on porn sites in the country.

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MoICT) today directed the telecommunication sector regulator, Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), to block public’s access to porn sites.

Citing that the recently enacted Penal Code has banned the exchange, publication and broadcasting of any indecent material, the MoICT has directed the telecommunication regulator to start implementing the provision with immediate effect.

A notice regarding the direction published in MoICT website states that such sites have not only negatively affected the social norms and values in the country but have also promoted sexual crimes and other evil activities.

The government has also urged telecom service providers, internet service providers and the general public not to get involved in the exchange and promotion of such sites.

Meanwhile, NTA officials said that necessary measures will be initiated soon to block such sites.
