Government to set up fertiliser warehouses in each province

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) is preparing to set up large storage facilities for fertilisers in each province.

Against the backdrop of supply constraint of agro fertilisers every year, MoALD plans to build fertiliser warehouses in all seven provinces to ensure that farmers are supplied with fertilisers on time every season, informed Tej Bahadur Subedi, spokesperson for MoALD.

“The government has already approved the proposal to construct large fertiliser warehouses in each province. However, we are yet to allocate necessary financial and technical resources for the purpose,” said Subedi.

MoALD plans to build fertiliser storage warehouses of almost 80,000 tonnes in every province. In a bid to capitalise on this project, MoALD estimates budget requirement of almost Rs four billion. “We’ll seek financial assistance for the project from Ministry of Finance soon,” added Subedi.

MoALD plans to use the available land resources of Agriculture Inputs Company across the country for setting up such fertiliser storage houses. The government plans to purchase 935,000 tonnes of fertilisers over the next five fiscals from India.

In a bid to ensure easy import and supply of fertilisers from the southern neighbour and its effective supply in local market, the government has already proposed the Indian government to supply the given amount of fertilisers under ‘government-to-government’ scheme from this fiscal year until 2022-23.

The government has projected demand of almost 1.9 million tonnes of fertilisers over next five years, of which it plans to buy 935,000 tonnes from India. As Nepal does not produce fertilisers, the agriculture sector here is fully dependent on India and a few other countries for the commodity.
