KATHMANDU: The meeting of the ministers for finance, agriculture and livestock development, forest and soil conservation; industry, commerce and supplies and federal affairs and general administration has decided to instruct sugar mill owners to clear the outstanding dues to sugarcane farmers within five days.
Till date the sugar mills have to clear around Rs 1.5 billion dues to cane growers, according to Industry Secretary Yam Kumari Khatiwada. The government is mulling to take mill owners into custody if they do not clear dues to the farmers within five days.
The meeting has also decided to mobilise a flying squad comprising of representatives of Department of Commerce and Supply Management, Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, Department of Food Technology and Quality Control and District Administrative Offices for robust market monitoring in festive season. Government has fixed sugarcane price at Rs 536 per quintal.
