Kathmandu, August 9
The Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) today suspended the Nepal Standard (NS) certification of three firms and registered case at the court after their products were found to be of below the set standard.
While the market inspection team of NBSM has suspended NS certification of Narayani Cement Industry (Bara), Narayani Micro Pipe Industry (Bara) and Nawa Nepal Plastic Industry (Rupandehi), the bureau has filed a case against ODAT Foods and Beverage at the District Administration Office (DAO), Kathmandu.
NBSM had found the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) produced by Narayani Cement Industry did not comply with the NS certification. Similarly, the NBSM monitoring team found the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes being produced by Narayani Micro Pipe Industry and Nawa Nepal Plastic Industry did not meet the set standards.
NBSM also filed a case against the ODAT Foods and Beverage after the company was found to be misusing the NS certification by selling substandard potato crackers.
Bishwo Babu Pudasaini, director general of NBSM, informed that the firms whose NS certification has been suspended will be given one month to produce their goods as per the set standards. “If they fail to maintain the quality standards as envisioned by the NS certification within one month, their NS certification will be scrapped,” informed Pudasaini.
Almost 450 goods produced in the country have acquired NS certification from NBSM so far. NBSM has started inspections of industries and products that have acquired NS certification after rising number of complaints regarding the supply of low quality goods in the market.
Though a majority of countries have been issuing quality certification to Nepali goods since many years, Nepal had formally started issuing NS quality certification also for foreign goods since last fiscal year. As per NBSM, 25 foreign goods available in domestic market had been issued the NS certification in the last fiscal year.
