Sanju Chaudhary created history in weightlifting when she won Nepal’s first-ever gold medal in women’s section here today.
Chaudhary lifted 70kg in snatch and 91kg in clean and jerk for the total of 171kg in the 59kg weight category to become the first woman lifter to bag a gold medal in the regional sporting extravaganza.
Sri Lanka’s RMNS Rajapaksha came second with 161kg, while Fayema Akther of Bangladesh was third with 160kg.
Kamal Bahadur Adhikari is the first Nepali lifter to achieve the feat when he bagged gold in the 2006 SA Games in Colombo.
Another Nepali lifter, Sangita Rai bagged bronze in women’s 45kg section after she lifted 57kg in snatch and 70kg in clean and jerk for the total of 127kg.
Rai broke Karina Chaudhary’s national records of 47kg, 65kg and 112kg.
India and Sri Lanka lifters won gold and silver respectively in the weight category. In 49kg section, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh claimed top three spots respectively.
Football
POKHARA: Sabitra Bhandari scored a hat-trick to lead Nepal to a 3-0 victory over Maldives in women’s football tournament here at the Pokhara Stadium.
With the win, Nepal made it to the final along with India, who hammered Sri Lanka 6-0. The two teams will meet in the league round match on Saturday before facing each other for the third straight time in final.
Bhandari surpassed Anu Lama’s record of 35 international goals when she opened the accounts in the 16th minute and added two more in the 20th minute and injury time of the match.
Handball
POKHARA: Nepali women’s team advanced to the semi-finals of the handball tournament.
Nepal defeated Bangladesh 26-24 for their second straight win in Group B.
Uma Rai top scored for the home team with eight goals. In another match, Pakistan beat Maldives 32-27.
In men’s section, Nepal faced second consecutive loss and crashed out from the league round. The home team faced a 43-19 defeat at the hands of Pakistan.
