Kathmandu, October 21
The Nepal Golf Association today felicitated Sukra Bahadur Rai and three other golfers for their outstanding performance in the 28th Bhutan Open Amateur Championship.
Rai won the overall title of the tournament by beating home country amateur Ziwang Gurung at the Royal Thimpu Golf Club last week. He also set the course record of nine-under 61 in the second round on his way to posting total score of four-under 276. Rai became the third Nepali golfer to win Bhutan Open after Deepak Thapa Magar (1993) and Tanka Bahadur Karki (2017).
Three other Nepali players finished in top five with young Subash Tamang claiming third position with the total score of two over 282. The 2017 edition champion Tanka Bahadur Karki came fourth at 285, while Niraj Tamang was fifth at 288.
NGA handed over Rs 50,000 worth golf kits to Sukra Bahadur Rai, while Subash Tamang received gears worth Rs 10,000.
Tanka Bahadur Karki and Niraj Tamang each got kits worth Rs 5,000. NGA President Tashi Ghale, Treasurer Kishan Agrawal and Kathmandu District Golf Association President Madan Rana felicitated the golfers.
Congratulating the golfers for their achievement, NGA President Ghale said the Nepali players dominated the field from the first day in Bhutan. “These players participated in two tournaments in China and Thailand before going to Bhutan and the week-long training in Bangkok also helped them a lot,” said Ghale. “I believe that we are in right track in our bid to win gold medal in the 13th South Asian Games,” he added.
NGA General Secretary CB Bhandari informed the players would receive training from coach Kim Baldwin. “We have roughly 40 days to prepare for the SA Games and the association is trying its best to provide the golfers with best training.
Kim Baldwin is coming to Nepal from Singapore next week and he will assess the players’ progress apart from training them,” said Bhandari.
