Lalitpur, July 15

Jawalakhel Youth Club defeated Tribhuvan Army Club in sudden death and advanced to the semi-finals of the Lalit Memorial U-18 Football Championship here at the ANFA Complex grounds today.

Ram Gurung scored the winning goal for JYC in the sixth kick of the spot kick battle, while Anish Ale failed to convert his penalty.

The match was decided in the first attempt of sudden death after both the teams converted three each penalties in tie-breaker after they failed to score in regulation period.

In tie-breaker, Dhiraj Pun Magar, Akshya Pradhan and Ashish Shahi scored for JYC after Sachu Gurung and Suraj Guro wasted the first two kicks.

Binay Pradhan, Shiva Bote and Bishal Sunar converted the first three kicks from the spot for TAC, while Bishrant Basnet and Nischal Gurung failed to score.

In another quarter-final match, Nepal Police Club defeated Machhindra Football Club 1-0. Manjil Rai scored the solitary goal of the match to seal victory for the departmental side. At a time when the second quarter-final match of the day was heading towards the penalty shootout, Rai found the back of the nets in the second minute of the injury time.

JYC and NPC joined defending champions Brigade Boys Club and Manang Marshyangdi Club it to the last four. BBC will face MMC, while JYC will play against NPC in Thursday’s semi-final matches.

The final match is slated for July 21. A total of 14 teams, youth sides of ‘A’ division clubs, took part in the tournament organised by All Nepal Football Association in memory of its acting president Lalit Krishna Shrestha, who died of electrocution in 2015.
