Geraint Thomas taken to hospital after heavy crash at Tour de Suisse

Geraint Thomas, the reigning Tour de France champion, has been taken to hospital after he abandoned the Tour de Suisse following a heavy crash during stage four of the race on Tuesday.

The Welshman fell 27 kilometres from the finish in Arlesheim and received treatment from medical staff after apparently injuring his right shoulder before eventually abandoning the race. Thomas was able to sit up almost straight away and could be seen moving both of his shoulders as he was treated by the roadside, although he had clearly sustained cuts to his back and right side and just above his right eye. The Astana rider Andrey Zeits was also involved in the crash and was immediately taken to hospital in an ambulance.
