Armymen outplay Sherpas in Pokhara

Tribhuvan Army Club came from a goal down to beat Himalayan Sherpa Club 3-1 and advanced to the semi-finals of the 17th Aaha Rara Gold Cup here at the Pokhara Stadium grounds today.

In the second quarter-final match of the tournament, Nawayug Shrestha scored a brace and George Prince Karki netted one for TAC after Patrick Goha had put Himalayan Sherpa ahead.

Goha opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he slotted home leaving TAC goalkeeper Bikesh Kuthu stranded following a pass from Tridev Gurung. The departmental side levelled the scores in the 71st minute through Nawayug Shestha’s header on a free kick from Santosh Tamang.

Nawayug put TAC ahead nine minutes later after he snatched the ball from Himalayan Sherpa defender before taking the ball alone and beat goalkeeper Kishor Giri in one-one-one situation. At a time when Himalayan Sherpa were pushing hard for the equaliser, Karki sealed TAC’s victory in the first minute of the injury time. Karki found the back of the nets in rebound after his initial shot was blocked by Himalayan Sherpa defender Kishor Giri.

TAC coach Nabin Neupane lauded his team’s performance, especially in the second half. “We played well in the first half and we came back even stronger in the second half,” he said. Himalayan Sherpa team manager Bijendra Pudasaini said his side lost the match despite putting up a good show. “We wasted a lot of scoring chances including two sitter ones,” said Pudasaini, who also praised the efforts of TAC players.
