Kathmandu, February 15

NCL Sports Private Limited is organising the Women’s Twenty20 Cricket League next month in Biratnagar.

Four city-based franchise teams will take part in the tournament slated for March 15-23 at the Baijanath grounds, informed the organisers at a press meet today. The tournament is second women’s franchise tournament announced in two days. Queens Event Management announced the Women’s Champions League for April at a programme yesterday.

National team skipper Rubina Chhetry Belbashi was overwhelmed with the announcement of two events in two days. “We had nothing to play two days earlier and all of a sudden we got two tournaments,” said Chhetry Belbashi. “We are grateful to the organisers for the announcement of the tournament for women cricketers and hope it will get continuation,” she added. “Tournaments like these will help in honing the skills of the players.”

The organisers said the names of the teams and cash prizes will be announced in due course. “We are in final phase of preparation of the tournament although we started the project a year ago,” said NCP Chairman Jay Raj Roy. “We have decided to hold auction to pick players in the teams,” he added.

National women’s team head coach Binod Das hoped the tournament would open new avenues for women cricketers. “Now that we have two tournaments for women cricketers, I am sure the players will get platforms to showcase their talents and break into the national side,” he said. “We are having auction in women’s cricket. We will categorise the players and also fix their base price and ceiling,” he added.
