Nepal Police Club defeated Sahara Club of Pokhara in sudden death and advanced to the semi-finals of the 21st Red Bull Budha Subba Gold Cup here at the Dharan Stadium today.

The match was decided on penalties after both the teams were deadlocked at 1-1 in the regulation period.

And they scored three goals each in penalty shootout before NPC prevailed over Sahara in the first kick of sudden death.

NPC skipper Bharat Shah scored from the spot before Anjan Devkota ended up with a wayward shot over the cross bar.

In tie-breaker, Ajit Bhandari, Devendra Tamang and Suman Subedi converted from the spot for NPC, while Sahara goalkeeper Lucky Kumar Karki denied Tej Tamang and Hari Kathayat.

Likewise, Bishwo Adhikari, Binod Gurung and Janak Karki scored for Sahara, whereas NPC goalkeeper Roshan Khadka saved Govin Thapa’s shot and Ramesh Magar shot off target.

Earlier, Nir Kumar Rai had put NPC ahead in the 33rd minute following a pass from Ravi Paswan, while Bishwo Adhikari levelled the scores from the spot in the 84th minute after Ajit Bhandari was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty area. Nir Kumar Rai was named the man of the match and he received Rs 15,000.

Meanwhile, CMG Club Sankata entered the semi-finals beating Mechi Netralaya Kakarvitta Football Training Centre in sudden death.

The opening match of the tournament was postponed due to low light with both teams scoring nine goals each after 11 kicks yesterday.

On Monday, Pujan Uparkoti of Kakarvitta and Amit Tamang of Sankata both scored in first attempts. The match was decided in the day’s second kick — 13th overall — when Dilen Loktan of Kakarvitta failed to score and Cedric Aba of Sankata converted from the spot.

Sankata goalkeeper Raja Babu Thapa, who saved Loktan’s shot, was declared the man of the match and he earned Rs 15,000.
