Cameroon’s Dauphins win Pokhara Cup

Dauphins Family Club of Cameroon won the title of the sixth Manakamana Cable Car Pokhara Cup Football Tournament here at the Pokhara Stadium today.

Dauphins defeated Nepal APF Club 1-0 in the final, thanks to the solitary goal of the match by Yannick Owona.

After a goalless first half, Owona found the back of the nets in the 54th minute after he scored from close range and that was enough for the Cameroonian team to claim the trophy in their first visit to Nepal.

Owona was named the man of the match.

Dauphins began the Nepal campaign from Nepal Ice third Farwest Khaptad Gold Cup in December last year and also participated in the Madan Bhandari Memorial Itahari Gold Cup before coming to Pokhara. They defeated the Pulsar Martyrs Memorial A Division League champions, Signature Manang Marshyangdi Club in sudden death in yesterday’s semi-final match. Nepal APF Club had made it to the final with a 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Rissho University of Japan.

Along with the trophy, Dauphins received Rs 755,000, while APF got Rs 405,000. Raju Nagarkoti of APF won two individual awards — the player of the tournament and the best goalkeeper. He received a Yamaha motorcycle and Rs 25,000.

Ramesh Dangal of APF was named the best defender, while Heman Gurung of Manang was declared the best midfielder. Yannick Owona of Dauphins won the best forward award and he was also the highest scorer of the tournament, while APF’s Rajendra Tamang was named the best coach. The individual award winners received Rs 25,000 each. Rissho University of Japan won the Fair Play award.

A total of 12 teams took part in the tournament organised by Kaski FA under the sponsorship of Manakamana Darshan Pvt Ltd.

President of All Nepal Football Association Karma Tsering Sherpa and Kaski FA President Milan Gurung among others handed over the prizes to the winners.
