Sanjay Lama maintained the lead after the second round of the Surya Nepal Western Open at the par-69 Himalayan Golf Course today.
Lama carded even-par 69 to add to his overnight score of 67 to post the 36-hole total of two-under 136. He was one shot ahead of Rabi Khadka, who carded a bogey-free four-under 65 to move to second position with the score of one-under 137. Top pro Shivaram Shrestha was third at two-over 140 after he shot a 71.
Lama carded one-under 34 before taking the turn and played one-over 35 on the back nine. Lama began the day with a birdie but dropped a shot on the next hole. After saving pars on six holes, Lama earned another birdie on the ninth. On the back nine, Lama faced a double bogey on the 11th and dropped a shot on the final hole against birdies on the 14th and 15th.
Former No 1 pro Khadka carded two-under 32 on either half. He carded birdies on the fifth and ninth holes to take the turn at two-under 33. Khadka then earned shots on the 13th and 14th holes to finish the back nine at two-under 32.
Top pro Shrestha shot two-over 37 on the front nine before playing even-par 34 on the back nine. He began the day with a double bogey and dropped a shot on the ninth against a lone birdie on the third hole. After taking the turn, Shrestha carded three birdies on the 12th, 13th and 15th holes but at the same time dropped shots on the 10th, 16th and 17th.
Jayaram Shrestha and amateur Sukra Bahadur Rai both shot two-over 71 to share the fourth position at three-over 141, while defending champion Dhana Bahadur Thapa and Surya Prasad Sharma were tied for sixth at four-over 142 along with amateur Ajit BK. Kamal Tamang and amateur Tanka Bahadur Karki shared the ninth position at 143.
Cut was applied at 15-over 153 with 21 pros and seven amateurs making it to the final round of the fifth event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2018-19. The event carries a purse of Rs 661,500 and top three pros will earn Rs 120,000, Rs 77,000 and Rs 55,000 respectively.
