Kathmandu, October 13

The suspended committee officials of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) have called the board meeting to discuss the procedures of withdrawing the writ petition filed at the Supreme Court.

“We have been always supportive towards the reinstatement of the CAN. We not only agreed to the member of the Advisory Committee but also approved the statute through Special General Assembly as demanded by the International Cricket Council,” said Vice-president Diwakar Ghale in a release. “The Monitoring Committee is evaluating elections of district bodies and various stakeholders have raised the issue of writ petition filed by us at Supreme Court. To pave the way for the smooth reinstatement, we are meeting on October 27 to discuss the legal procedures.”

The major controversy in cricket began after the National Sports Council formed the ad hoc committee without giving approval to the elections of the CAN and the ICC suspended the membership of CAN on April 25, 2016. The elected committee moved the court and the ICC formed the Nepal Advisory Group to prepare the new statute.

After the elected committee opposed the idea of new statute, the ICC agreed to amend the existing one and move forward. The controversy stood as the General Assembly of CAN last year failed to pass the statute as suggested by the ICC. After rounds of meetings, the CAN, Advisory Group and ICC reached consensus resulting in the approval of the statute unanimously. The ICC then formed the five-member Monitoring Committee to assess membership distribution and election process in all districts.
