Kathmandu, September 17
The government has appointed Madan Kharel as the executive chairman of Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) for a period of four years.
A Cabinet meeting held on Sunday night decided to grant executive authority to Kharel, who had served as the managing director of the corporation from 2012 to 2015, as per the NAC Act.
Kharel’s appointment means that NAC’s Managing Director Sugat Ratna Kansakar no longer holds the leadership role in the national flag carrier.
As per NAC Act, the government can appoint chairman, vice-chairman or any director as executive chairman. On September 14, the Cabinet had appointed Kharel as board member of NAC.
Dispelling any concerns related to the new appointment not going down well with Kansakar, Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari said that the two had agreed to work in collaboration for betterment of NAC.
“They have assured to work together, which will make NAC more effective and efficient,” said Dhruba Pokharel, press
adviser of Minister Adhikari quoting the latter.
Meanwhile, Kansakar reiterated his commitment to do his bit in working for the betterment of NAC and promoting Nepal as a tourist destination. “I plan to give my 100 per cent in the remaining eight months of my four-year tenure,” he said.
Executive Chairman Kharel said that he will work to make NAC institutionally and financially sound by getting everybody on board.
Interestingly, Kharel had resigned from his post of managing director of NAC in 2015 when government had appointed Shiva Sharan Neupane as the executive chairman of NAC.
